If the Lord Doesn't Want To

Updated: Jul 31, 2023

Ever thought about that? The things the He doesn't want to do in your life, or even in the world in general. So often we're hoping He 'allows' us to do things; to accomplish tasks, projects, life-dreams; to enjoy a fuller life; to be safe/secure. Too often, we're really just doing enough just to get by, to keep Him pleased (not thrilled) with us... too concerned with the cause-n-effect of our relationship and fellowship with. Today's devotional gets us to focus on the 'today only' aspect of our lives and relationship with Him. See, in Matthew 6:34 we are directed to "Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof."

I always think it so odd that He would end this directive reminding us just how evil each day actually is... and we seem to want to plan and live tomorrow's today, too. But selfishly, we rarely consider how tomorrow's evil is just way too much for us today... today's evil is more than we are 'proving' we can handle, anyway!

Convicted about that? See... God actually has to 'throttle back' His will for us, He has to temper His grace toward us, He has to blend His peace with our 'faith pace', as it were; how much we believe, trust, accept. In many ways, like connecting a 220v cloths-dryer outlet to your cell-phone... BzzzzzzzZZAaaattt... the phone cannot handle 'that amount of power' all at once. But, put it into reserves (a battery), and it just keeps going and going...

So, today's devotional is something of a reminder that His will for us is MUCH deeper and more powerful than you are 'allowing' Him to experience with you... yours is to watch, wait, learn where your faith is being throttled-back, why your trust is shallow (i.e. not as deep as it can be), how your joy and peace are being stolen from you each day, each moment. So much so, Jesus said in John 10:10; "The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly."... not just 'life', but more abundantly, which is to say; fuller, richer, something on the order of 'high definition', in fact!

How?

Well, back to the "if the Lord doesn't want to" aspect of your relationship with Him... you may be tying His hands; keeping Him at a safe distance; worrying way too much about later, and not right now. James 4:13-15 gives us broad brushstrokes about it with "Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: (14) Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. (15) For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that."

'If the Lord Will' is a powerful way to live in your today. Your tomorrow will fall right in line!
