Who knows when or where the phrase "seeing is believing" started, but it is a blatant lie; not even disguised as a half-truth. Seeing is NOT believing, it is 'understanding', it is acknowledgement of reality, it is something we experience once we see it (understand, or acknowledge its presence)... after, not before.
Believing, at it's root, is trust. To 'see' something engages the understanding side of our lives, the logical, the tangible. Our devotional today helps us better understand this key difference in these two; trust and understanding.
We cannot 'understand' God's peace, His spirit filling presence in our lives, His leading of our lives. The busyness in our world has convinced us that the deeper things in life must be explained, tracked, postulated, and even traced by a formula, by a scientific explanation, by a set of guidelines. But again, these all focus our attention on the understanding side of life, where trust is not needed.
Proverbs 3:5-6 reads; "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. (6) In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." Nowhere in the scriptures is there any formula, or series of steps, or scheme presented to obtain His peace, His life, His Spirit in your life. It is strictly by exercising your trust (faith) in His calling on your life. One other scripture that specifically reminds us of this is Romans 5:1, which states; "Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ."
Again though, 'seeing is not believing', but believing is actually trust; your trust being confirmed by His peace enveloped around you as your awareness of His presence calms your spirit... from within, not without. You can't "see" to obtain His peace, only trust. It would be more correct to say; "Believing is seeing".
How? "Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace always by all means. The Lord be with you all." 2 Thessalonians 3:16
