Time Isn't Money

Updated: Jul 14, 2023

There are a number of things I dislike passionately, and one of them more than the others; getting the waning a fleeting moments of someone's time for whom I'd waited and waited to spend quality time. Maybe I need or want that person too much, or maybe I value their presence so much that I try to get every ounce of value from our time together. Regardless, when the 'awaited for' time finally arrives, but is cut too short or filled with interruptions and/or distractions... well, my heart breaks. Sure, I probably have tomorrow's appointed time with this person, but I miss them now, I long for their fellowship now, their companionship now, and our exchange now... not, 'maybe later'.

Our devotional today is something of a carry-over of yesterday's "Divine Inseparability" devotion, in that the Lord longs for dedicated time together with us. In some ways, I find myself asking Him, "What's the fuss, Lord? You are with me always, so why do you also need/want exclusive and quiet time, too?". And then I remember my experiences that I shared above... longing for that quality time, the exclusive access, and certainly the richness of focused attention with a loved one are essential for deep and meaningful relationships. Like my experiences with a loved one, the Lord is so thoroughly blessed when we spend sacrificial time with Him, when we set aside time with Him that we could otherwise be using to 'tend to things' in our lives. They say, "time is money", but that is the half-truth the world has been peddling to hide the reality that "time is life", actually. Sacrificing good quality time with the Lord enriches your life, leaves you calmed, prepares your soul, and certainly balances the chaos of your world. Money just allows you to buy things, and those things only mimic a quality life.

'Make' time for the Lord, even now... for the Psalmist said, "For thou hast made him most blessed for ever: thou hast made him exceeding glad with thy countenance." (Ps 21:6) The rewards of His fellowship go far, far beyond monetary gains. In fact, John 7:38 reminds us that "He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water."

Time isn't money, time is life itself. Enjoy your life, enjoy the Lord.
