Firsthand, I know how wrenching it is to be separated from someone who is so very close to me. That horrible emptiness, loneliness, and loss has two distinct sides; 1) missing the qualities in that person's presence, and 2) selfishly losing the companionship, the sense of belonging, and worse, the inescapable feeling of abandonment.
Our devotional today assures us that Jesus will never leave us, never 'go missing' in our lives, and even better... nothing we do (sin, disappointment, neglect) can ever separate us from His abiding love! In fact, Romans 8:38-39, states; "For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, (39) Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
Too often, we may 'feel' alone or abandoned of the Lord, and that's when we must quiet our souls and listen for His 'still small voice'. With our human (horizontal) relationships, we have the tangible component of fellowship, so it is more quickly obvious when we are apart. But even the tail-end of Joshua 1:5 reminds us of His spiritual (vertical) presence, with; "...so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee."
Again though, getting a phone call from a loved one, or having a lunch date with another person, and even just grocery shopping with each other makes it so much easier to acknowledge that presence in our lives, that sense of connection, and that wonderful feeling of belonging and being wanted. With the Lord, He is within us through all those 'events' and more.
Trust in that, live in that, rest in that... and His peace will embrace your soul.
