One Good Deep Deserves Another

Updated: Jul 14, 2023

I know, it's a funky title for a devotional and normally I would agree, but our devotional today is admonition for the deeper life in the Lord. I know, that too is an old story and something of a cliché saying buzzing around these days.

But, I read through Psalms 42:7, which states; "Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts: all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me." I like reading the King James language because it makes me 'read' the words and untangle the message the Lord is conveying.

God calls to us from the depths of Heaven and we hear and listen to Him in the depth of our being, hence the 'deep calleth unto the deep' reference. Communion, fellowship, and heart-felt exchange with Jesus our Lord is not superficial, it is not shallow and trite... rather, the depths and quiet places in our lives is where He communes with us, and we with Him. That's what the end of that passage means by 'thy waves and thy billows are gone over me', in that He encompasses our heart, spirit, and soul... deeply, and thoroughly.

But, we have to answer His call, to 'step out unto the deep' with Him, to trust, to immerse in His loving presence. It's not easy to do in this shallow and 'instant gratification' world in which we live... not at all. You can start by 'not' taking His presence and acceptance of you for granted... and praise Him for His depth, for His presence and peace. In fact, Psalms 95:1-2 encourages us with; "O come, let us sing unto the Lord: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation. (2) Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms."

So? What's the point aside from a deeper walk with the Lord, you may think. Here is what; not everything in your life is exclusively 'for' you. The Lord is sharing His deep love, life, and peace with you... and in time, you'll grow deeper and deeper and deeper... and also stronger in faith, larger in your walk and much more sure and steadfast in your convictions. Almost without realizing it, you will be in a place of mentoring those around you. That depth He has shared with you will appeal to others, and they too will want this same free access to the Lord of Lords, and the King of Kings! And that richness, therein.

You will be a solid source for those around you, as Matthew 7:24-25 notes; "Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: (25) And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock."

Therein, one good 'deep' deserves another!

Shhhh... D'Ya Hear That?

How many times have we heard that? Someone telling us to be quiet so we can 'hear that'; like we can hear what they are hearing... or, think they are hearing. Yet, we attempt to eliminate 'other noise

When God Can't Find You
